Aegean Airport Ticket Office & Lounge

The design of the new ticket office and lounge area of Aegean Airlines in Athens International Airport derived from the desire of the new combined airline to redefine its identity. The selected existing airport structures are opposite from each other and had to be redesigned into a single entity to accommodate the company’s needs and requirements. The aim was to create a form and structure of spaces with particular emphasis on innovation and leadership while being friendly and accessible to the user.
The design approach of the spaces was held by a guiding sense of floating, flight and speed. The dominant design feature is a “ribbon” that simulates a path; a flight starting and ending, while carrying the airline’s identity color. This “ribbon” forms access ramps, and by ascending and descending, like air gaps in a real flight, it creates counters or seats. In some places it penetrates the ceiling as if it disappears into the clouds to appear again holding the company’s logo symbolizing the end of a safe flight.
A floating feeling is achieved by slight elevation of the construction’s floor which is enhanced by the use of hidden lights. The aerodynamic design of the individual components refers to speed, and their ergonomic approach ensures the required comfort for all users including people with disabilities.
The choice of materials and the design of lighting and ceiling contribute to create a modern, comfortable and welcoming space that highlights the innovative company profile and attracts the interest of passengers. The integration of individual technological interactive elements in the design enhances the unique experience of the visitor, denoting the modernized character of the company.
